The civil war that followed the collapse of the Somali state in 1991 has destroyed all the country’s public services, social and economic infrastructures including health care services and educational institutions, and more than a decade the country has become a hub for fundamental extremist militias and piracy. the fight of terrorism, which emerged to be an international threat, led the displacements of tens of thousands of people, fleeing from their homes in parts of the country’s central and southern regions, a country that is ill equipped to deal with natural and environmental disasters such as droughts  andfloods and etc.

SOYA Background

Different parts of the community became victims of the war, violance, droughts and floods, but women, children and youth are recognized to be the most vulnerable. We felt the need of urgent mutual response to this deteriorating situation. After a meeting of young, intellectual professionals held in Mogadishu, Somalia In January, 13, 2016, to address the need of the society, the idea of establishing SOYA ; a non-profit, non-religious, non-racial and non-partisan community serving and development organization, Somali Youth Association SOYA; came to mind, and SOYA was established in January,

13, 2016 in Mogadishu, Somalia. Somalia Youth Association is a participatory, non-partisan, non-political, nondiscrimination, social, humanitarian, civil serving community based agency that is founded to improve the status of human dignity and equal rights in the Somali community, provide health care services, facilitate education and create agriculture opportunities for the families to reduce hunger and food shortages. SOYA is a connecting bridge between local community and the charities, wellwishers, donors, UN agencies, international organizations and the Somali Diaspora community. SOMALI YOUTH ASSOCIATION (SOYA) is committed and willing to work in a dedicated and tireless manner with the community grassroots, youth and elders, men and women to achieve unwavering & sustainable development with active community participation.


Our vision is to see change of equality, human dignity, justice, and freedom in the lives of everyone among the community regardless of sex, race, religion and ethnicity and create a lasting equal opportunities and violence-free environment in Africa.


To facilitate education and health care services, develop a secure standard of living, create a conducive environment for co-ordination and cooperation in the different parts of the community, especially for women’s participation in the processes of the community development, to empower self-dependency and to build the capacity of the Somali community and to end poverty, violence and human rights abuses.

Primary Goals & Objectives

Somali Youth Association {SOYA} has four interconnected primary objectives aiming to improve our ability to assist the Somali community through engaging our partners and stakeholders.

1) Human rights: There are many types of human rights abuses which create violence and inequality in the community and our aim is to work with the youth, elders and women to create awareness to prevent all inhumane activities such as rape and torture, and we believe the possibility of creating environment where everyone among the communities has his rights protected and enjoy equal resources with his/her other members of the community, while advocating for the rights of the victims of the abused members of the community and promoting peace in order to upgrade social and economic conditions of the community especial low grade people.

2)Education: As education is one the most powerful tools to fight violence, poverty and extremism, our aim is to create conducive learning environment for the children in south and central regions of Somalia by rehabilitating the old schools and building new ones in rural villages, training teachers among the local community and promoting the importance of education to increase the number of enrolment specially the 4-6 ages
